Marlborough is the archetypical English market town – a place where coins were minted in Norman times, Tudor kings hunted for deer and where coaches heading west from London stopped to feed and water their horses. There is a good shopping centre and a good choice of places to eat. On Saturdays and Wednesdays there is a street market which offers everything from locally grown produce to pots, plants, and pottery. There is also a monthly Farmer's market and an annual Continental market. On the north side of the high street is the Merchant's House, part of which is open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays in summer. The house was built following the Great Fire of 1653 and was the property of a silk merchant. Rarely for a house of this type in a town centre, it still retains its original room pattern.
